A crafter's lament

Craft shows are certainly not what they used to be
years ago! For those of us who have been doing
them for many years, we're seeing some dramatic
changes taking place, aren't we? (and they aren't
all good!)

I was inspired to write a poem "A Crafter's Lament"
(below) at the end of this past year. 2007 was rough
and I entertained the idea of retiring from craft
shows... but I'm a true craft show addict.

If your show schedule was steadily booked last
year, I am almost positive you will recognize
yourself in every verse.

I am making these available as laminated
bookmarks for just $3.50 (includes shipping).
Send me an email if you would like to order

A CRAFTER'S LAMENT

Oh why do I do these craft shows
sit here and twiddle my thumbs
While customers stroll past my booth
looking blind and dumb

Lord, there has to be an answer
a better way than this
The days of making money
sure seem hit or miss

It seems the organizers
just don't give two spits
They're letting in the vendors
who sell imported shit

I keep holding onto hope
that this will be a better year
But each time that I send in rent
I find I'm filled with fear

Will this show be rained out
Will they put up any signs
Will they squeeze us in like sardines
Will there be too much stuff like mine

Will people even show up
or will this be a "secret" show
Will this hard work all be worth it
Oh God, I just don't know

But once again, I'm up at 5
I'll load the van, be on my way
Just hoping you will hear me Lord
praying for a banner day

When I get there I'll maneuver
into an empty parking space
To unload all of my bags and bins
with a smile on my face

I'll struggle with the hand truck
hope there aren't steps to climb
I sure could use a helping hand
but no helpers can I find

Oops, I forgot to bring a sandwich
so for lunch a hot dog I will eat
And I'll be rubbing my poor ankles
from all those hours on my feet

I'll drink another cup of coffee
when it's hard to stay awake
Then practice Kegel exercises
waiting for a potty break

To those who foolishly are thinking
craft shows are just fun and games
I'm here to tell you....you're mistaken
or totally insane

But as much as I complain and crab
everyone darn well knows
That it won't be long before you see me
working yet another show

Theresa, I really liked this poetry. It all sounded so true and close to heart. I am a new blogger here and really in love with the arts and crafts antique items. Infact, I like to blog about issues and items related to conventional and modern arts and crafts. I would like to invite you and everyone else to read my blogs at www.indianhandicrafts.co.in/blog/ and leave your comments.
